Barry Gabay

Barry Gabay is a retired secondary school teacher and adjunct university instructor. He has been a writer and contributing editor to Pen World since 1999. As a child in school, he was required to write with a wooden pencil or a cartridge pen. He has retained an affection for both since childhood. His particular areas of interest are Parker Duofold, Parker 51, Montblanc 149 and 146, American pens from 1910-30 and 1940-60, EF and F nibs, B and Oblique nibs, hooded nibs, flex nibs, dip pens, cartridge pens, eyedropper pens, any pens from Japan, Italy, and England, wooden pencils, ink bottles, and the history of handwriting. Among contemporary pens, he is most interested in Pelikan, Sailor, and Montblanc. His two-part article on the history of the Montblanc 149 (“The 149 is 50”) is considered the definitive treatment of that model.
