About Maki Shimano
Maki Shimano is a Japanese calligraphy and modern lettering artist based in Tokyo. She began her calligraphy practice at the age of five. After graduating from university, she worked in the bridal industry while continuing her brushwork, and later became an independent artist.
Her work reinterprets the fusion of Japanese and Western calligraphy into contemporary art. She has created calligraphy for luxury and lifestyle brands, developed collaborative products, and supervised educational materials. Her practice spans live performances, exhibitions, product design, branding, and workshop instruction.
She is the author of several books on calligraphy, including Modern Calligraphy and Modern Calligraphy with Brush Pens.
