Nib Smoothing Basics
Led by Josh Lax · J.J. Lax Pen Co.
About This Workshop
If you've ever wished your fountain pen felt a little smoother, wetter, or more responsive, this class is for you. We're excited to welcome Joshua Lax of J.J. Lax Pen Co. for a hands-on introduction to nib tuning and smoothing. Josh is known for his thoughtful, precise approach to nib work. In this three-hour session, he'll walk you through what actually makes a nib write the way it does—the basics of getting your pens just right.
All tools and materials will be provided, and you'll spend part of the class trying the techniques yourself. Expect to get up close with loupes, abrasives, and ink, and to leave with inky fingers and a better understanding of how small adjustments change the way a pen feels on paper.
You'll learn how to identify common nib issues, what good alignment looks like, how to adjust flow, and a step-by-step process for smoothing nibs. Whether you're new to fountain pens or have been collecting for years, this workshop will explain the craft behind a well-tuned nib and give you the confidence to start working on your own nibs.
